What is the application of minibrads 18G?

18 gauge brads are widely used because of their versatility and subtlety. These thin finishing nails are virtually invisible after they have been driven into the material to be attached. This makes them ideal for finishing woodwork. This includes applications such as frames, skirting boards and furniture pieces. The "G" in 18G minibrads stands for the American gauge, and 18 gauge corresponds to a wire thickness of 1.2 mm. In general, 18G finishing nails have a length of 15 to 25 mm.

What distinguishes 18G nails from nails is their thin size and rectangular head. This head is the same width as the shaft but deeper, resulting in greater bonding force. Despite the improved adhesion, less force is required to pull the head through the top layer compared to nails with a larger, round or truncated head. The minibrad offers significant advantages for fine carpentry. However, it is good to know that they are not suitable for larger construction purposes, as they do not have the same pull-out value as nails and screws.

The different types of 18G brads

18 gauge brads are usually made of galvanized steel or stainless steel. When exposed to certain weather conditions or salt water, for example, it is advisable to choose stainless steel mini brads, as they are more resistant to corrosion. The best 18G brad nails therefore depend on the project. However, a disadvantage of stainless steel is that it is considerably more expensive than galvanized steel, due to the high nickel content. Nickel is a valuable material that contributes significantly to the price of stainless steel fasteners.
