Narrow crown and wide crown staples

Parts of a staple:

There are 3 important measurements on a staple; the crown, the leg and the wire dimension. The wider the crown and the thicker the wire, the more secure the fastening will be.

The holding power of a cliched staple is dependent on all these measurements.

Note: Before you buy always check the minimum and maximum length of the fasteners that fit in your tool (mentioned in the tool owner's manual)

Stainless steel staples: what is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is a commonly used term, but what does it actually consist of and what are the properties of this material? Stainless steel is a mixture consisting mainly of iron, chromium, nickel and carbon. To give the fastening material specific properties, this mixture can be supplemented with other elements such as titanium, manganese or silicon. This results in many types of stainless steel.

Stainless steel can rust, but its composition means it is much better protected against this than regular steel. Stainless steel can only be considered to be stainless steel if there is a minimum of 11.5% chromium and a maximum of 1.2% carbon in the alloy. Inox is another name for stainless steel and comes from the French word 'inoxidable'.

The advantages of stainless steel staple

Stainless steel staples are mainly used in applications where extra protection against rust is required. Consider, for example, mounting materials that are used outdoors. Stainless steel fasteners are more expensive than galvanized steel fasteners. This is mainly due to the high nickel content. The properties of stainless steel justify the price difference.

What is the difference between stainless steel type A2 versus stainless steel type A4?

Stainless steel comes in different levels of protection, including type A2 and type A4. The main distinction between these types lies in the composition and the alloying elements added to the steel:

  • Stainless steel A2: This common grade of stainless steel consists mainly of iron, chromium (18%) and nickel (8%). These stainless steel staples and staples are suitable for outdoor environments with a mild climate. This type of stainless steel is a good choice for standard use
  • Stainless steel A4: type A4 is of a higher quality and contains additional alloying elements. In addition to iron and chromium, stainless steel A4 also contains nickel (10-14%) and molybdenum (2-3%). These additions protect the mounting material even better. This makes these stainless steel staples and staples the choice for aggressive environments such as environments near seawater or when exposed to chloride ions (for example in swimming pools)

We mainly sell A2 quality stainless steel in our webshop. Are you considering purchasing A4 stainless steel staples? We are happy to advise you! Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information and support.

Condidering steel wire thicknes when bying stainless steel staples

If the staple has a width of the crown that is 10 mm or greater and the thickness of the steel wire exceeds 1.00 x 1.25 mm, then it is a staple with a thick wirebase. Are the crown width and wire thickness smaller? Then the staple is more suited for finer finishes. The thinner metal wire makes them less visible and makes it easier to pierce through the material to be attached. Thick wire stainless steel staples are better suited for sturdy mountings due to their higher pull-out value.

Are stainless steel fasteners magnetic?

It is often said that stainless steel is not magnetic. As we have mentioned before, there are many types of stainless steel alloys. Some of these may be slightly magnetic because the fasteners are machined. Some examples of magnetic machining are rolling, tapping or drawing. One thing is certain, whether or not magnetic, it says nothing about the quality and strength of the material.

What is better: stainless steel or regular steel?

Is stainless steel better than regular steel? The answer depends on the specific application and material requirements. Although stainless steel is not necessarily better than steel, it does offer several advantages. For example, an important advantage of stainless steel is its better resistance to corrosion compared to ordinary steel. In addition, you will not be bothered by rust water stains in wood, for example. It is often thought that stainless steel is harder than regular steel, but this is based on a misunderstanding. It's even a little softer.
